Israel is the Source of Worldwide Anti-Semitism

by Rabbi Gershon Twerski

The media reported the fact that the Mossad has invested millions in protecting Jewish institutions around the world. How paradoxical this is. We find ourselves seventy-one years after the establishment of the State, which professed to mitigate if not eradicate anti-Semitism in the world. And yet, not only has it not disappeared, but it has made a comeback with renewed vigor. Not only does the State not constitute a cause for reducing anti-Semitism but it in itself is the primary source of its resurgence. How ironic it is that a country needs to invest millions in order to provide security for Jewish institutions around the world against anti-Semitism both from Christians and Moslems together.

HaRav Elchonon Wassermann in one of his letters drew a comparison between gentile anti-Semitism and the conduct of secular Jews towards Torah-true Jews. He brings an example of a Zionist newspaper using a headline "a death blow to chareidim". Not long after, anti-Semitic world papers came out with a headline of "a death blow to the Jews".

Alongside the flourishing of anti-Semitism in the world, we experienced this week a brief test of `independence'. The fact of the U.S. army's withdrawal from Syria opened a window to the total dependence which an `independent' nation has upon Big Uncle Sam. The dread and fear of America abandoning us sent chills down the backs of our political leaders from the dangerous embroilment of our large enemy on the North, which was felt along the length of the border. Amazing how those who believe in the deception of "we will take our future into our own hands" find themselves totally dependent upon the good will of outside nations.

In 5737, HaRav Shach made a public speech and dwelled upon this point of the power play of "my might and the strength of my arm" vis a vis the dependence upon American support, declaring that both are examples of relying upon "a fragile cane."

He said: "Today the time has arrived that our leaders here believe that a smile from the President of the U.S. or of any other goy represents our salvation. But by the same token, just as he smiles at us today, tomorrow he may smile at someone else. A Jew must always know that this is meaningless. Esav despises Yaakov. They can smile, but their mouths speak vanity and their right hand is one of falsehood."

And he added, "An elderly Jew in Yerushalayim once explained to me the posuk which states that `their mouths speak deception,' and continues by stating, `their right hand is lies.' This means that their signature is also sham. Their signed promises are as worthless as are their words.

"One should not be impressed when we see a photo of the U.S. President smiling to someone and that person smiling back at him. It doesn't mean a thing. We have no one upon whom to lean except for our Father in Heaven."
