Letter from HaRav Chaim Kanievsky shlita about Bein Hazmanim

Motzei Shabbos Mishpatim 5778

I would almost suggest abolishing the Bein Hazmanim and vacation breaks and all of the kind. Wasn't Bein Hazmanim devised so as to relax the mind which toiled in Torah throughout the zman, as is described by the Rambam? But this hardly applies in our times.

At any rate, all vacationers are warned to be very vigilant so as not to lose all they had gained during the zman (all the levels they attained through toil in Torah). Therefore, they are obligated to be very regular in establishing daily immutable study times, as is written in the Shulchan Oruch Orach Chaim 155 and the Mishnah Berurah there, and also to guard their eyes which are the great agents of sin, as is brought in Yerushalmi Brochos, and not relax vigil over their eyes, also not to be in any place which has the polluted devices (exactly the same as one is forewarned during the zman itself).

One must be strict about the laws of tefillah according to the detailed rules in Shulchan Oruch Orach Chaim 90, for example regarding praying with a minyan, and that there be bircas kohanim and reading from a kosher Sefer Torah, and reading of the Haftorah from a parchment.

How in place is it that our rabbonim gather in council to establish these practices. May we accordingly merit the increase of kvod Shomayim and the ultimate Geula, speedily and in our times.

Chaim Kanievsky
