Chareidim Should not Study in Academic Settings

Israel rabbonim are very opposed to study in academic settings. This is especially relevant in the unique situation in Israel where these institutions are used as deliberate instruments to erode the cultural walls that chareidi society has erected in order to keep out the unwanted influences of modernity.

Mir Holds its 10th Annual Yarchei Kallah in Jerusalem

It was a momentous evening beginning on Sunday 19 Marcheshvan at 10:00 this week, seeing the many hundreds of people who attended, listening avidly to the keynote speaker, the Rosh Yeshiva, HaRav Eliezer Yehuda Finkel, and HaRav Nachman Leibowitz, also a Rosh Yeshiva. Especially moving was the fact that the audience was comprised of baalei batim from the business world who came to recharge their souls during a week of Yarchei Kalla Torah study under the sponsorship of the Yeshivas Mir. The event focused on the two hundredth year since the yeshiva's founding, commemorated by over two hundred laymen who were brought back to the study benches. This, it was pointed out, is the perpetuity of the yeshiva - the Torah.

Rabbi Meir Kessler: Don't Feel Poor, Feel Happy

by Rabbi Rafael Berlson

Is a person allowed to intentionally choose a life of poverty if they won't feel spiritually rich? Rav Meir Kessler, the chief rabbi of Kiryat Sefer, deals with these questions on a daily basis. Here, he presents a halachic standpoint.

HALF-A-ZLOTY

Fiction by Chaim Walder

A plea for acceptance of hyperactive children.

"I can't take it anymore," she said, as they looked at him silently.

"Tell me, what should I do with him? He doesn't give me a minute's peace, endangers himself, and endangers others. He simply drives me out of my mind. It's either him or me. But actually, why should I talk? Just look at him."

Challenges of the Modern World: Tsnius - the Soul of our Nation

by Mordecai Plaut

Not over every problem do gedolei Yisroel led by Maran HaRav Eliashiv shlita all come in person to attend a kenes aimed at improving the situation. In their capacity as advisors of countless individuals and organizations, they would certainly come only when they see for themselves the tremendous need to deal with a growing issue that has caused serious damage and could, if not checked, do much worse.
