Mishmeres Shabbos Goes to Europe

By Yechiel Sever

A delegation of rabbonim and experts from "Mishmeres HaShabbos", headed by HaRav Eliyahu Beifus, had responded to a call from rabbonim of England and France to make an instructive tour throughout Europe explaining the dramatic changes which have taken place in the field of electric appliances and devices in recent years and their effective Halachic applications. They intend to present the problems and their practical solutions in a wide array of various devices.

The rabbonim of this delegation were granted a letter of special approbation and encouragement from HaRav Dov Landau which states: "The Mishmeres HaShabbos organization deals with the in-depth clarification, both from the technical and the halachic aspects by working with prominent halachic authorities and professional experts and finding solutions enabling the public to use the various electric appliances in question in perfect conformance to the Halacha."

During this explanatory tour, the rabbonim and technological experts of the delegation held a series of gatherings and meetings with rabbonim from England and France, who joined in the call for heightening public awareness, in turn, by the rabbonim of communities throughout these countries, explaining how the technologically advanced appliances of modern times incorporate digital sensors which were not present in the past and which cause significant problems with regard to Shabbos observance, and that these require clarification, both from their joint halachic and technical aspects, regarding each and every electrical device.
