Jewish Tombstones found in Jordanian Building

By Yisroel Rosner

Fragments of tombstones belonging to Jews buried a century ago were discovered in an exploratory dig in East Jerusalem. The tombstones were apparently taken from the cemetery on Har Hazeisim from the period of Jordanian rule over that area to serve as building stones. They were unearthed during an exploratory excavation before the construction of a hotel on the parking lot in the A-Zahara neighborhood near Shaar Haperachim.

The digging revealed a ruin with some of its stones engraved with Hebrew inscriptions. Among these were legible the initials of T.N.Tz.B.H. and the Hebrew months of Adar and Sivan, as well as the words `tamim' and `rachamim', `keHillel' and the years (in Hebrew) 5655 (1895), 5572 (1912) and 5577 (1917).
