United Torah Jewry Will Not Send a Representative to the Knesset Committee Regarding the Draft Bill

By Eliezer Rauchberger

The United Torah Jewry party will not be represented in the committee established by the government and the new coalition on the subject of military service headed by MK Yochanan Plasner from Kadima.

UTJ spokesmen explained that this committee was specially created by the new government to strike at the Torah world and to impose concessions on a fundamental principle that has been in effect since the founding of the State allowing Torah students to pursue their studies undisturbed. The Torah party has no interest whatsoever to cooperate with or to acknowledge this committee.

The party spokesmen stressed that while heading the special body established by the Ministry of Defense dealing with the subject for the past two years, Plasner's objective and activities were purely to harass the chareidi public, so that UTJ has no intention whatsoever to cooperate with such a committee.

Nevertheless, the party spokesmen clarified that they would keep tabs on the goings on of the committee, and if they saw a need to participate in the hearings unofficially in order to present their unqualified position of preserving the purity of Torah students and immunity of students against the draft, they would do so.
