Tiberius Mayor: Cinema Will Not Open on Shabbos

By L.S. Wasserman

Following an attempt by the Tiberius Municipality to upset the status quo by opening the Yad Shitreet Cinema on Shabbos, Mayor Zohar Oved declared, "The cinema will not open on Shabbat."

The pledge was made during the course of a phone conversation with Degel HaTorah Councilman Rabbi David Ochana in which the Mayor denied any intentions of allowing the cinema to operate on Shabbos.

Tiberius residents were incensed following a media report, based on a ranking city official, that the municipality planned to allow the cinema to open on Shabbos. The move was part of an effort to revive Yad Shitreet, which has been largely desolate — even on weekdays — for the past three years.
