Condemnation of "Chareidi" Media

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

On Thursday 25 Adar II, Yated Ne'eman published an explanatory editorial condemning the various forms of modern "chareidi" media and calling everyone to refrain from any contact with them.

The editorial noted that protests and condemnations have been published by a wide range of leading figures, including gedolei Yisroel shlita, as well as rabbonim and educators, explaining that reading or listening to these media outlets is a threat to the balance and character of the chareidi public. They noted that in operating such a media outlet it is not sufficient that an individual supervise it. It is necessary that it be done under the instructions and guidance of maranan gedolei Yisroel shlita, since it is a matter that affects the entire community.

Some of these outlets, including radio stations and phone news lines, provide a steady stream of artificial news, including "live reports" and regular news shows, that can cause a sort of addiction that is destructive of character and time.

A delegation of roshei yeshiva and rabbonim that went to HaRav Eliashiv shlita to discuss the matter said that their experience showed how these media outlets create a tangible danger of addiction to "news" (nei'es) that is hard to break. This causes bitul Torah and a general spiritual smallness under the steady diet of news that is mostly devoid of any importance and use, aside from any issues of loshon hora and rechilus. Moreover, in the course of their following the standards of modern news organizations, they naturally give publicity to many points of view that are posul and damaging. The mind and attention of a developing yeshiva student is properly dedicated to elevating thoughts and disciplined learning.
