Tax Exemption Extended to Stipends at Torah Institutes

by Eliezer Rauchberger

The Knesset plenary unanimously approved in second and third readings a legislative proposal to grant a tax exemption on stipends for students and researchers at Torah institutes and institutions of higher learning.

The proposal was initiated by MKs Alex Miller (Yisrael Beiteinu) and Ronit Tirosh (Kadima), and was brought before the plenary for approval by Finance Committee Chairman MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni.

Two weeks earlier the proposal was approved by the Finance Committee. In its original form the bill applied only to students at higher learning institutions, but following firm demands by MKs Rabbi Moshe Gafni and Uri Ariel (Ichud Leumi) the Finance Committee extended the law to apply to stipends at Torah institutes, including programs that do not lead toward an academic degree.
