Gedolei Issue Ban Against "Chareidi" Websites

By Yechiel Sever

Torah-true Jewry in Eretz Yisroel and abroad is responding positively to a call by gedolei Yisroel to uproot Internet websites that claim to be "chareidi" yet breach the walls of kedushoh and tohoroh protecting Beis Yisroel against grave Torah prohibitions. Maranan verabonon clearly stated that using or assisting these websites is strictly forbidden and "all of the prohibitions and boundaries set by gedolei Yisroel with regard to television fully apply to these Internet channels." The main focus of attention was on forums and blogs that claim to be chareidi and/or to deal with the chareidi community.

The chareidi public, public officials, institutions, organizations and advertising firms gave notice they would sever all ties with these websites, unstintingly accepting the directive by gedolei Yisroel shlita to avoid dealing with or even visiting these Internet sites, due to the threat they pose to the purity of the Jewish home for generations to come.

By Thursday morning several sites announced that they would close down, and individuals who worked and managed large sites announced that they would leave. Several businesses announced that they would not advertise on the sites in question, and public figures would not consent to interviews with representatives of those Internet sites.

Led by Maran HaRav Eliashiv shlita, the unequivocal notice warned against the terrible breach caused by the so- called chareidi websites, which spew forth gossip and slander, disseminate tumoh and cause numerous stumbling blocks such as loshon hora, rechilus, dvar sheker and to'eivoh. The letter stresses the responsibility every individual must take to avoid these websites.
