Sycamore Tree at Barzilai Building Site Removed

By Yechiel Sever

After long weeks of delaying the construction of a reinforced emergency ward at Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon due to an ancient sycamore tree growing at the site — which was removed much more slowly than the graves at the site — the tree was finally moved early this week.

Although the graves were disinterred at a speed unheard of in Eretz Yisroel, when an old sycamore was discovered at the site, construction work was held up for weeks until special arrangements were made. Building the emergency room was considered a direly urgent matter when it came to unearthing graves — and the chareidi community was criticized for its alleged lack of consideration of pikuach nefesh — yet a mere tree was cause for an extended delay.
