Salvadoran Government Awarded Certificate for Saving Jews During Holocaust

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni awarded a certificate of appreciation to her counterpart in El Salvador, Marisol Argueta de Barrillas, for her country's actions to save Jewish lives during the Holocaust.

The certificate reads, "The Government of Israel and the Jewish people sincerely thank the Government of El Salvador for its contribution toward saving Jews persecuted in Europe during World War II by granting Salvadoran citizenship through the Salvadoran consulate in Geneva, headed by Consul General Col. Jose Arturo Castellanos."

During the war Castellanos authorized a consulate official to issue thousands of "citizen certificates" to Jews, mostly from Hungary.
