Twelve-Year-Old From Beitar Illit Drowns in Golan

By Yechiel Sever

A trip to the Hatzbani (Snir) River Nature Preserve in the Upper Galilee ended in tragedy when 12-year-old Yaakov Shlomo Yudelevitz of Beitar Illit drowned. Young men who were nearby at the time of the accident searched for the boy, pulled him out of the water and brought him to rescue workers from the Jordan branch of Magen David Adom and the Golan Rescue Unit as they arrived on the scene. All attempts to resuscitate the boy failed. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Rabbi Shimshon Grosbard, chairman of Hatzoloh Beitar Illit, told Yated Ne'eman, "This was a shocking and frightful incident, particularly since it involved a boy who was sound in body and mind who was taking part in a trip organized by the talmud Torah, with adult escorts. Nobody can be blamed.

"It's important to repeat the established safety guidelines over and over again, and for adults to warn youngsters. In this case they did follow safety guidelines as far as we know, yet a tragedy still took place. Therefore it's important to go beyond the safety guidelines, keeping a close eye out to ensure that everybody is under supervision at all times. On excursions with groups of small children they should be kept close to the adults to prevent falls, choliloh.
