Taanis Esther falls this year on Thursday, 13 II Adar, March 20. The Taanis was enacted so that we will remember that the Jews fasted and beseeched Hashem in the time of Esther to save them from their enemies. The minhag is to give three half shekels as a zecher to the machtzis hashekel.

Purim falls on erev Shabbos, 14 Adar (Mar. 21). In Yerushalayim the Purim Meshulash (Triple Purim) takes place this year. Al HaNissim is recited on Shabbos and we somewhat add more to the Shabbos meal. The Megilloh is read on erev Shabbos and matonos le'evyonim are also given out on erev Shabbos. On Sunday, 16 Adar, March 23, mishloach monos are sent and the Purim meal takes place.
