Gafni Asks Yishai to Stop Shabbos Desecration at Carmel Caves

By Yechiel Sever and Y. Arielli

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni (UTJ) asked Industry, Trade and Labor Minister Eli Yishai (Shas) to prevent Shabbos desecration at an excavation project underway at the Carmel Caves in Haifa.

In his letter Rabbi Gafni wrote, "Work is currently being executed as part of a project at the Carmel Caves in Haifa. I have received complaints that the work is being done on Shabbos as well and the workers at the site include Jews. Besides the fact that a project of this scale and importance should not be carried out on Shabbos, even by non-Jews, even graver is the fact that Jewish workers were seen at the site."

Rabbi Gafni also notes that last Shabbos he sent a representative to verify that there are no Jews working there, "but unfortunately I was subsequently told that Jewish workers could also be seen at the worksite, which is a violation of the Work and Rest Hours Law."

At the end of the letter Rabbi Gafni writes, "I would be very grateful if your ministry acts to enforce the law and Shabbos observance at the site."
