Ukraine Pledges to Grant R' Nachman's Grave Legal Protection

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

During a visit by ranking Israeli Foreign Ministry officials in the Ukraine, officials from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry and President Victor Yushchenko's personal advisor pledged to defend the gravesite of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov against any legal suits and to turn it into a national heritage site to prevent local businessmen from taking over the site following a legal dispute.

The delegation traveled to the Ukraine to promote the understanding reached recently while Yushchenko was in Israel to discuss the battle against antisemitism, the memory of the Holocaust and preserving the Jewish legacy in the Ukraine. The delegates paid a visit to Uman to see firsthand how the Ukrainian authorities are handling the site. Ministry Deputy Director Pinchas Avivi reached an agreement with the President's advisor and the Mayor of Uman that visitors coming to pray would retain free access to the facility and that it would receive the status of a site holy to Judaism since sacred religious sites are protected by international law.
