Water Bird Survey Cancelled Due to Lack of Participants

By G. Lazer

The Nature and Parks Authority decided to cancel the annual water bird census, which had been scheduled for a Shabbos, due to a lack of participants.

Two weeks ago the bird count was postponed after UTJ and Shas objected to plans to execute the survey on Friday and Shabbos. Environmental Minister Gidon Ezra cancelled the survey, saying that no harm would be done if it were limited to Friday. The bird count was rescheduled for this Monday, but had to be cancelled due to the small number of participants who registered.

The survey has been held for the past 43 consecutive years by volunteer birdwatchers or members of the Society for the Protection of Nature's ornithology groups. Due to the cancellation, for the first time in decades Israel will not contribute to the international effort to track and preserve breeding grounds and watering holes, such as pools and ponds.
