Young Jewish Teacher Murdered in St. Petersburg

By R. Hoffman

Dmitri Nikulinsky was murdered by skinheads as he left his St. Petersburg apartment on his way to shul last Shabbos. The 22-year-old, who taught at a local Jewish school, was brutally assaulted and suffered multiple stab wounds. The attackers took nothing and left him to die. Community representatives said the murder was typical of skinhead gangs in the city. According to other reports it may not have been antisemitic.

Three clear antisemitic incidents have been reported in Russia and the Ukraine in recent weeks. Two weeks ago unidentified vandals smeared black paint on a new beis knesses in the Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk.

Last week a pipe bomb laid on the windowsill of a beis knesses in Saratov, Russia exploded. No injuries were reported but the building sustained damage.

And last month a Jewish Agency exhibition in the Ukrainian city of Kharkov was torched. The tent that housed the exhibition was heavily damaged. Eventually it was decided to go ahead with the event and keep the scorched tent on display.
