Education and Finance Ministries Approve Early Retirement Quotas for Chareidi Teachers

By Betzalel Kahn

Bais Yaakov teachers will now be eligible for early retirement just like teachers in the general education system.

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni spent a prolonged period of time trying to persuade various officials at the Education Ministry and the Budget Department of the Finance Ministry of the necessity of the change. Until now only teachers employed in the official government and government-religious school systems were eligible for early retirement.

To bring about the change numerous meetings were held with officials from the Finance Ministry, the Civil Service Commission, the Education Ministry and even the Knesset Education Committee, which reached a decision to require the Finance and Education Ministries to allow teachers at chareidi schools to opt for early retirement with the same benefits granted to teachers in the mainstream sector.

The Union of Agudas Yisroel Teachers was recently notified of the new policy to allow early retirement in accordance with the quota in the general education system. Speaking in the name of the teachers, Union Chairman Rabbi Shlomo Karelenstein thanked Rabbi Gafni for his persistent efforts to make early retirement available to Bais Yaakov teachers as well.
