Rabbi Ravitz: Local Authorities Should Provide Chareidi Education Equal Funding

By Eliezer Rauchberger

MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz tabled a bill to amend the Budget Foundations Law that would rectify the distortion in the current law. According to the proposed law the local authorities would have to provide totally equal treatment for all yaldei Yisrael.

The current Budget Foundation Law states the Education Ministry must provide education corporations Chinuch Atzmai and Maayan HaChinuch HaTorani the same funding made available for all other yaldei Yisroel, but the local authorities apply their own interpretation, saying that since the law does not explicitly mention the local authorities they are not required to transfer education funding. The lack of clear directives in the law allows the local authorities to justify discriminating against chareidi children.

During the coalition negotiations between Kadima and UTJ the need to legislate a chareidi education law was raised for discussion. Such a law would solve the problem, but since the negotiations are still not complete and their future remains uncertain Rabbi Ravitz decided to table a private proposal designed to put an end to discrimination among children by creating equal funding for the education system through the local authorities.
