Education Ministry Funding for Privileged Organizations

By Betzalel Kahn

While the Justice Ministry constantly undermines budget funding for chareidi education based on claims that the budgeting fails to meet various criteria of fairness, when it comes to the secular education system, anything goes. The Marker revealed that several paragraphs of the Education Ministry budget were specially drafted to fit certain organizations in such a way that other organizations would not be able to benefit from the funding.

The special funding was discovered during a check by the Justice Ministry and the Finance Ministry's General Accounting Department. According to the report, some of the organizations entitled to receive this funding are even headed by former Education Ministry officials, making the entire process even more suspect, if not illegal.

At the Wingate Institute, for example, the former director of the Education Ministry's Sports Administration, Dr. Shuki Dekel, serves as head of the managing committee. Similarly Eliezer Shmueli, who serves as board chairman of Hamifal - Educational Children's Homes and board chairman of the Youth Hostel Association used to work as the director of the Education Ministry.

Following the report, the Movement for Quality Government contacted Education Minister Yuli Tamir and Attorney General Mani Mazuz, demanding an immediate inquiry into the affair and that clear criteria be set. She was also asked for a thorough inquiry into claims that former Education Ministry employees are working at organizations that receive the special funds, which raises suspicions of criminal conduct.
