In the shadow of the serious security situation
Countrywide Chinuch Atzmai Summer Programs End

by Betzalel Kahn

The annual Chinuch Atzmai summer day camps, which were held in 115 of the movement's schools all over the country from Dimona and Yeruchom in the south to Bet She'an and Chatzor in the north, have ended. The programs included rich and varied educational and social activities for approximately twenty thousand pupils who spent their time in an exciting, educational framework after the end of the school year. The programs took place under the direction and supervision of hundreds of the regular educational staff.

The long-established summer programs, in which the great efforts and success of the Educational and Welfare Unit in the Chinuch Atzmai are evident, took as their central theme, "Leave and Return in Peace." Much effort was made to emphasize the importance of road safety, from an educational viewpoint — the Torah mitzvah of "venishmartem me'od lenafshoseichem."

Dozens of summer day camps in the north in Tzfas, Carmiel, Tiveria, Acre, Kiryat Ata, Natzrat, Nahariya and Rechasim were shut down earlier in accordance with the instructions of the Home Front Command and Education Ministry, because of the security situation in the north. The summer camps in the center and south of the country also took place in the shadow of the terrible events. In accordance with the ruling of Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv all trips were cancelled and activities took place only on the school premises.

Towards the end of the camp programs, the heads of Chinuch Atzmai together with delegates of the local authorities conducted a tour of some of the venues. They praised the dedicated work and visited schools including: the Adir School in Bet She'an, the Torani School in Rechasim, the Beis Yaakov in Rosh Ha'ayin, the Toras Moshe School in Yeruchom, the Beis Yaakov Beis Dovid in Cholon and the Mesillah School in Rishon LeZion.

The delegation of the Chinuch Atzmai administration, headed by HaRav Avrohom Yosef Lazerson and Rabbi Tzvi Baumel included senior representatives of the Welfare Unit in the Chinuch Atzmai, representatives of the Education Ministry, educational superintendent S. Shimoni, Mr. Shlomo Dahan, national educational superintendent for summer camps, and Rabbi C. Farber the national supervisor for road safety in the chareidi school system. The delegation visited the day camps and was impressed with the rich programs on offer. They were joined in their tour by Mayors and other city representatives. These summer camps provide spiritual rescue and fun for tens of thousands of Chinuch Atzmai pupils, particularly those from peripheral areas and in the far-flung development towns.

Before the summer camps began a central seminar for the teachers and counselors was held in Bnei Brak, where the speakers included HaRav Yehuda Yosefi and the heads of Chinuch Atzmai Rabbi Avrohom Yosef Lazerson, Rabbi Meir Luria, and Rabbi Tzvi Baumel. Talks about education for road safety were given by Rabbi C. Farber and Dr. R. Rotem, from the Education Ministry.
