Elevators to Connect Jewish Quarter to Kosel Maarovi

By Betzalel Kahn

Jerusalem Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky instructed municipality officials to build an elevator connecting the Jewish Quarter to the Western Wall Plaza in order to assist the elderly, the handicapped and large families.

The municipality is currently working with the Company for the Rehabilitation and Development of the Jewish Quarter on the final plans, after which rapid construction work will get underway immediately. With an estimated cost of NIS 5 million ($1.1 million) the glass elevator will allow passengers a spectacular view of the Kosel Maarovi area and Har Hazeisim. The municipality is also assessing the possibility of installing an escalator.

The Mayor said the plan is part of a wide-scale project to improve accessibility in the Old City and the area of the Kosel Maarovi to make visiting easier for the physically challenged.
