R' Avrohom and Frida Weiss zt"l

By Betzalel Kahn

A large crowd was on hand at the levaya for R' Avrohom and Frida Weiss z"l, who were killed in a tragic car accident in Jerusalem.

Avrohom Weiss was born in 5681 (1921) in Pressburg to HaRav Yitzchok Aharon Weiss. He studied at Yeshivas Pressburg, where he was held fondly by his rebbe, HaRav Akiva Sofer, the grandson of the Chasam Sofer.

Frida Weiss was born four years later in the Old City of Jerusalem to HaRav Yitzchok Shpiegelman, a 13th generation resident of Eretz Yisroel, and her mother, Chaya Tema, the daughter of HaRav Shmuel Shlomo Eisenstein.

Her father HaRav Shpiegelman was close to the author of Leshem Shevo Va'achlomoh, the grandfather of Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv ylct"a, and to HaRav Shmuel Salant. In her youth she was a regular visitor in the home of HaRav Yosef Chaim Zonenfeld. Her father was a prominent member of Beis Medrash Tiferes Bochurim in Meah Shearim where HaRav Eliashiv gave daily shiurim for decades until moving to the beis medrash set up near his home in recent years.

R' Avrohom Weiss moved to Eretz Yisroel 60 years ago and after marrying, the two moved to the Zichron Moshe neighborhood. He would rise for tefillas Shacharis kevosikin every day and would spend all day in Torah study.

The accident took place at the intersection of Rechov Yeshayohu and Rechov Dovid Yellin when a bus hit the car after apparently failing to see it. Hatzoloh Yisroel arrived at the scene quickly and performed resuscitation as part of efforts to save their lives. The two were rushed to the hospital in a Magen David Adom ambulance, but a few hours later, at 6:00 p.m. Thursday evening, the two returned their souls to Borei Olom.

News of the tragedy caused shock among their family members and acquaintances. At the levaya, which set out from Beis Medrash Zichron Moshe, the couple were eulogized by the rov of the neighborhood, HaRav Aharon Fisher, Mrs. Weiss' brother, HaRav Tzvi Shpiegelman, and other rabbonim. The maspidim noted the unusual circumstances of their petiroh and how the couple were united in life and in death. R' Avrohom Weiss and his wife, Frida Weiss, are survived by her two brothers as well as a son and daughter.
