HOME & FAMILY

Building the Beis Hamikdosh
by H. Fuchs

"Bye, bye, Pinchos, " I waved to my seven-year-old, the last of the chicks to leave home. "Have a good day, I'll see you at lunch time." I watched him out of the window as he got onto the yellow school bus, gazed a little longer at the blue skies and enjoyed the fresh morning breeze for a few moments.

MEMOIRS
A Promise Kept

by Rochel Leah Perlman

Both my husband's family and mine came to the U.S. via Ellis Island. My in-laws' name in Europe was Psharalske, which was changed to Perlman. In later years, I learned from a woman lecturing on Jewish names that this was taken from the Hebrew word pshara or compromise. They must have been people who helped settle arguments in their European home towns. This trait truly described the Perlman's home, where never a harsh word was uttered.

TALES OF YESTERYEAR
What a Joyful Wedding!

by Yisca Shimony

The entire Jewish population of Brisk attended the wedding, each family bringing along some special dish to serve. They knew that the father of the bride, who was still known as the gvir, was no longer a wealthy man. He had lost his entire fortune in the big fire. But he showed no sign of sadness at the wedding; he danced with the eminent rabbi, R' Chaim Soloveitchik, and all the townspeople, young and old, joined in the circle of dancers.

Homeless

by Adina Hershberg

I attempt to return home to the house in which I grew up in the town of Kingston, Pennsylvania. Time after time I fly around and find myself on different courses. I pass familiar landmarks such as my Uncle Julius' home, Orange Grove Market, Goldstein's Deli, and Rabbi and Mrs. Pernikoff's house. I finally find myself on Rutter Avenue, close to my beloved home which holds so many memories for me.

Going and Coming
by Bayla Gimmel

Be an outreach person. Smile, be friendly and try to make each of your contacts a positive experience. Even if you think that when it comes to the world of kiruv you don't know whether you are coming or going, give it a sincere try. You may find yourself leading at least one fellow Jew in just the right direction.

Unwanted Guests
by A. Ross

This has been a particularly busy wedding season, and may all the blessings with which the young couples are showered, come to fruition. Having studied hearing loss and its causes, I am fully aware of the wilful damage I am inflicting on my eardrums by attending many weddings, several times a week, and rejoicing with each family.

A Relaxing and Creative Vacation
by Chedva Ofek

Children don't need special attractions during vacation. They need the attention of their mother and of course, something to do. My motto was to see vacation as a challenge . . .

Seeing the Results of Our Actions
By Rosally Saltsman

We were driving home on the highway coming back from Tel Aviv in a neighbor's van. I was sitting next to the driver and my son next to me in the front seat. There was a problem with the air conditioning so the windows were open and the stuff on the dashboard kept flying forward.

Your Medical Questions Answered!
by Joseph B. Leibman, MD

I just lectured to the N'shei in Ramot and I had a wonderful time. I forgot one point that I promised to answer: When is a person considered fat?
