Team Funds Outrage Settled; 16 Percent Increase in Yeshiva Funding for November-December

Following prolonged discussions between Degel HaTorah Secretary MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni and ranking Finance Ministry officials during recent months, a decision was reached to increase funding support for yeshivas by 16 percent during November and December. In addition the Team Funds, which the State pledged to pay years ago, were finally transferred.


Chief Police Investigator Dismissed from Post

On Sunday, Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra suddenly dismissed Cmdr. Moshe Mizrachi, head of the Police Investigations Unit, from his post. About a year ago, then- attorney-general Elyakim Rubinstein recommended that be removed from his post for illicit wiretapping and transcribing recordings and hoarding them for undisclosed future use.


Thousands Participate in Levaya for Remains of Desecrated Sefer Torah

Thousands turned out in the rain on Monday 9 Kislev to participate in the heart-rending levaya for the parchments of a sefer Torah stolen from the Chernobyl beis medrash in Jerusalem and desecrated. Shortly after the parchments were buried at Har Hamenuchos the writing of two new sifrei Torah for the beis medrash in Ezras Torah began.

Acco Cemetery Committee Meets Today

The committee set up to seek an engineering solution for the railroad tracks slated for construction in the middle of an ancient cemetery in Acco is scheduled to hold another meeting on Wednesday this week.


American Agudah Convention to Focus on "Yisroel Bein Ho'Amim"

This year's convention of Agudath Israel of America, the organization's 82nd, will focus on the theme "Yisroel Bein Ho'amim: A Part of the World, Apart From the World." The convention, which attracts thousands of Jews from around the world, will open this Thursday, November 25 at the Stamford Westin Hotel in Stamford, Connecticut. The event will be chaired by Shmuel Yosef Reider and co-chaired by Stephan L. Rosedale of Cincinnati.

Majority of Israelis Favor Preserving Sanctity of Shabbos

A large majority of Israelis support a feeling of kedushoh on Shabbos according to a special survey commissioned in advance of the large Shabbos rally to be held at Yad Eliyahu Stadium in Tel Aviv on 29 Teves.

The scandal that we reported last week, about a study of the Ministry of Education that showed that chareidi schools received two or three times the government support that regular schools received, is the result of a mistake that should never have happened.

A Hungarian Family Comes to Eretz Yisroel

At dawn, on Friday the seventeenth of Av, 5617, a family of seven people stood upon the deck of a ship, hoping to finally catch sight of land. The early morning mist gradually faded to reveal the peacefully sleeping port of Jaffa. What a contrast to the bustling port of Trieste, Italy, which they had left days before. Everything here seemed so holy! The eyes of the seven members of the Hamburger family eagerly wished to absorb all the holiness they could grasp and they stood mesmerized and transfixed. It was Chaya Malka Hamburger, the mother, who shook herself awake, as if from a trance.
