A Mass Demonstration Against Shabbos Desecration is Planned

A special steering committee overseen by maranan verabonon was set up to prepare for a mass demonstration in defense of Shabbos Kodesh initiated and organized by the Vaada Lemaan Kedushas HaShabbos Be'eretz Yisroel, a committee started by businessman and philanthropist Rabbi Refoel Halperin, founder and owner of the Optica Halperin chain.

Rabbi Druckman's Conversion Court Issued 499 Conversion Certificates Last Month

Four hundred and ninety-nine conversion certificates signed by Rabbi Chaim Druckman were issued in the month of Tishrei alone, according to a report presented during a meeting of the Knesset Constitutional Committee to discuss the issue of conversion.

HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman Visits the US

HaRav Aharon Leib Shteinman set out last week for a two-week visit in the US, after HaRav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Philadelphia, and HaRav Aharon Feldman, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel in Baltimore, paid a visit to HaRav Shteinman two months ago, bearing a letter signed by roshei yeshivos in the US asking him to come to strengthen the Torah and yeshiva world there.

Sharon Instructs Shetreet to Halt Excavations in Acco

Following public outrage over the desecration of ancient Jewish graves in Acco Prime Minister Ariel Sharon instructed Transportation Minister Meir Shetreet to halt excavation work at the site. As a result it was decided to postpone the mass demonstration originally scheduled to take place in Jerusalem last Thursday.

French Government Report Calls Anti-Zionist Left a New Form of Antisemitism

Radical anti-Zionists who support "the Palestinians' armed struggle no matter what form it takes" and agitate among leftists against the existence of the State of Israel "belong to a modern form of antisemitism," says a report on antisemitism released by the French Ministry of the Interior. The author of the report, writer Jean Ropan, raised the wrath of anti-Zionist organizations by recommending punishment be meted out for anti-Zionist incitement.

Ongoing Cemetery Desecration in South Africa Cause Concern

Jewish leaders in South Africa are expressing concern that isolated Jewish cemeteries in the small rural towns are being singled out for vandalization. This comes in the wake of the desecration of the Vereeniging Jewish cemetery last month, in which forty gravestones -- more than a fifth of the total -- were severely damaged, many beyond repair. The attack was a recent occurrence, since a former resident had visited the cemetery only a few weeks prior to this and found everything in order. Other recent acts of vandalism have been recorded in Riversdale and Heidelberg, and also in Cape Town.
