Keren Rav Avrohom Cohen Announces Prize Winners
By Betzalel Kahn

The board of the Keren Rav Avrohom Cohen released the names this year's awardees, selected at the recommendation of gedolei Torah in advance of the major awards ceremony to be held on motzei Shabbos Bereishis, like every year at or near the yahrtzeit of the Chasam Sofer, at the Ramat Tamir hotel in Jerusalem.

The Ateres Hamishpot award will go to Yeshivas Karlin-Stolin alumnus HaRav Sholom Mordechai Halevy Segal, author of Mishkon Sholom, who is currently learning at Kollel Ohel Rabbenu Yonoson and Kollel Ulpanna DeRabbenu Yochonon, of Karlin-Stolin, Jerusalem.

The Kesser Torah awardee is HaRav Moshe Ze'ev Eitan, an alumnus of Yeshivas Beis Dovid and Yeshivas Ponovezh, now learning at Kollel Ponovezh in Bnei Brak.

The Nezer Horo'oh awardee is HaRav Shlomo Fertig, an alumnus of Yeshivas Kol Torah and Yeshivas Tifrach and now studying at Kollel Horo'oh Ohr Avrohom Abbo, which is part of Kollel Ahavas Torah in Beit Shemesh.

The board notes that no fewer than 25 outstanding avreichim who have already completed studying almost all of Choshen Mishpot and Even Ha'ezer applied for the Ateres Mishpot, making the decision over this and the other stipends more involved than in previous years.

The ceremony will be held on 25 Tishrei, the yahrtzeit of the Chasam Sofer, and will be combined with a celebration marking the completion of the Keren Rav Avrohom Cohen cycle by those who were awarded the stipend in the past and are now completing the five-year program: HaRav Aryeh Leib Lehr, who was Kesser Torah, and HaRav Dovid Twersky, who was Nezer Horo'oh, who is now a rov and moreh tzedek for the Rachmastrivko kehilloh in Jerusalem. All those receiving the stipends must pass rigorous tests to display their mastery of the material they study.

The annual Shas siyum, which is new to the Keren Rav Avrohom Cohen, will also be included in the ceremonies. Dozens of avreichim took part and were tested orally on the entire Shas.

On the foundation's nesius includes leading Torah and horo'oh figures: HaRav Shmuel Halevy Wosner, HaRav Nissim Karelitz, HaRav Shmuel Birnbaum, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Mir-USA, and HaRav Yitzchok Tuvioh Weiss, gavad of the Eidoh Chareidis in Jerusalem.

Rav Avrohom Cohen is a prominent leader of the chareidi community in the US who has done much to help numerous Torah and chessed projects in Israel and abroad. Through his efforts numerous immigrants from Eastern-bloc countries have undergone bris miloh. He also authored a large halachic book called Bris Avrohom HaKohen.

Nineteen years ago he set up the foundation bearing his name to provide award winners generous support for five years of study.
