Sharon Asks Reform Figures to Help Him Elect Jewish Agency Chairman

By G. Lazer and ITIM

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon decided to bypass the Likud Party by contacting Reform organizations to nominate Zeev Bielsky as chairman of the Jewish Agency.

The Reform organizations agreed to select him as their nominee. Informed observers say Labor will back the nomination if promised good executive positions in the Jewish Agency, including chairman of the Jewish National Fund.

On Sunday Likud Worldwide chose Natan Sharansky as its candidate for Jewish Agency chairman. On Monday evening the court began hearings on an appeal by three Likud Worldwide activists demanding Sharon be prohibited from interfering in the chairmanship of the Jewish Agency. But it seems that he will be able to present Bielsky as a candidate, one way or the other.
