International Kashrus Conference Opens in Jerusalem — Issurei Hano'oh Ingredients Possible in Medicines

A four-day kashrus conference opened at the Renaissance Hotel in Jerusalem on Monday, bringing together heads of the leading kashrus organizations in Israel and around the world. The first-of-its-kind conference organized by Machon Maskil LeDovid will address a variety of kashrus issues currently relevant around the world. The conference schedule includes shiurim, workshops, guidance and information exchange.

The opening session began with a shiur given by Rav Yehuda Shereshevsky, a chemist and researcher at Machon Maskil LeDovid's Unit for Scientific Halachic Research, who addressed concerns of avodoh zora and issurei hano'oh in components of medications made using acetylcysteine bases. He revealed real concerns about the use of human hair from India and hair taken from corpses in medications containing the active ingredient acetylcysteine. He also noted cysteine is also used as a flavor enhancer in baked goods.

A delegation of rabbonim participating in the conference will meet with Maran HaRav Eliashiv, shlita, and will have an opportunity to ask him halachic questions.

Topics scheduled for discussion include kashrus supervision via satellite and video cameras, bishul Yisroel by remote control, new types of fish and infestations, worms and bugs, liquor kashrus, organic products, dinei momonos utevi'os, the relationship between supervisor and supervised, reciprocal relationships among kashrus organizations, world standards, dual loyalty, kosher shechitoh and avoiding tzaar baalei chaim, relying on digital kashrus certificates, shatnez, and many more.

Among the speakers were HaRav Dov Landau, HaRav Moshe Vaye, HaRav Shneur Zalman Ravach, HaRav Mendel Gershon Gorlick, HaRav Yosef Efrati, HaRav Levy Yitzchok Halperin, HaRav Shlomo Machpud, Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger.
