Efforts to Reverse Dismissal of 500 Teachers

By Eliezer Rauchberger

Degel HaTorah met on Monday with the Agudas Yisroel Teachers' Union and the Chinuch Atzmai administration to discuss the planned dismissal by the end of May of nearly 500 Chinuch Atzmai teachers by the Education Ministry.

The meeting was held after members of the Teachers' Union asked to discuss tactical approaches to stop the dismissals or to reduce them to a minimum. Deputy Welfare Minister MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz said all of the chareidi representatives in the Knesset who hold posts of any kind should threaten to resign if the Education Ministry's dismissal notices are not rescinded. He also called on the Chinuch Atzmai administration to make every effort to prevent the dismissal notices from being sent out at the end of the month, through consultations with gedolei Yisroel.

MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni said action must be taken to hold meetings with the Education Minister and the Ministry's director-general and to explain to them that during the past two years Chinuch Atzmai has suffered from staff cuts more than any other segment of the education system and therefore it should not be subject to the same policy as the rest of the education system.
