IDF Planned Special Iraqi Mission

The IDF General Staff's elite special-operations force known as Sayeret Matkal, trained in 1992 to assassinate Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein by sending commandos to Iraq who would fire sophisticated missiles at him during the funeral of his father-in-law. The plan was canceled after an accident that resulted in the deaths of five soldiers that took place in the presence of the IDF commander at the time, Ehud Barak.

Sharon Predicts Qurei will Fall

Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei's government will collapse within six months, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon predicted. Sharon made the comment during consultations with his advisors on a major diplomatic speech that he plans to deliver at the Herzliya Conference at the end of this week. He claimed that the American administration shares this assessment.

Welfare Minister Zevulun Orlev has instructed the Director- General of Bituach Leumi to submit a plan within two weeks for the return of Bituach Leumi payments taken illegally from teachers, after a Yated Ne'eman investigation one- and- a-half years ago discovered the deduction was illegal and led to a public battle over the issue.
