New Signs at Egged Bus Stops in Jerusalem
by Betzalel Kahn

"Passengers are requested to sit in the bus according to halacha," read signs posted at 120 bus stops in Jerusalem's chareidi neighborhoods. The signs were installed by Egged based on an initiative by the Traffic Advisory Council for the Chareidi Sector as part of efforts to promote the idea of separate seating on all lines serving the chareidi public.

Yossi Chachkes, Egged's Jerusalem director of operations, said Egged is prepared to accommodate the special needs of the chareidi public to the best of its ability. "Egged is definitely attentive to the needs of distinct sectors among public transportation users and tries hard to provide for these needs. Members of the Advisory Council expressed their appreciation toward Egged management for running interurban mehadrin lines in Jerusalem, joining the intra-urban buses already operating according to the mehadrin arrangement.

Police officials complained that on two mehadrin lines Egged operates in Jerusalem passengers board via the rear door unsupervised after the attack two months ago on Line 2 was executed by a terrorist who boarded via the back door. An Egged spokesman replied that chareidi passengers can clearly spot non-chareidi individuals boarding the bus.
