Keep Smiling

Short inspirational pieces by Rabbi Avrohom Schwartz, Kiryat Sefer, author of A Handful of Light, Hearts on Fire and other works on Mussar and Hashkofa

There are flat areas and hilly areas. If you drive a car, this may not make much difference to you, but if you ride a bike, this is critical. For while a bike rider may enjoy cruising down from the high spots, once he hits the bottom, again, he needs to pedal hard.

In helping us to travel through our lives, it is mostly bicycles that Hashem gives us and not cars. Moreover, most of the ground we must cover is hilly and not flat. So we need to pedal; otherwise, we stand still. We need to pedal; otherwise, we fail to reach the destinations Hashem wants us to reach -- we fail to live the lives Hashem wants us to live.

But can we not somehow arrange to have cars? This is possible. To get our hands on such vehicles, though, to acquire the emotional, intellectual cars we need requires great efforts. Possibly even greater than pedaling up a hill.

We have to pray, and then pray again. Still, once we have them, we may cruise through every day with twice the pleasure and twice the ease.
