Bnei Yisroel Were Fruitful . . .

The first mitzvah given to Odom Horishon was: "Peru urevu umil'u es ho'oretz" -- be fruitful and multiply and fill up the land. In parshas Shemos the first fact about Israel in Mitzrayim that we are told, right at the beginning, is that they fulfilled this Divine commandment: "And Bnei Yisroel were fruitful and gave birth and increased and became a very mighty throng, so that the land was full of them" (Shemos 1:7).

Kelm Humor
by A. Lessin

Kelm. The very name invokes an image of intense devotion to Torah and mussar, ignoring worldly pleasures and striving for self-perfection. For those privileged to have had contact with alumni of the renowned Talmud Torah in Kelm, the memories include pictures of towering personalities who reached unbelievable heights in ruchniyus. What place is there for humor in such a picture? The words simply do not belong on the same page, let alone one following the other.

Sharing Pain: Visiting the Sick and Mourners on Shabbos
by Rabbi Daniel Yaakov Travis

Feeling for Others

I once had to discuss a very distressful situation with HaRav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l. With a heavy heart, I entered his small office, and poured out my problem to him. When I asked him what he thought I should do he said he had absolutely no idea, but with tears in his eyes he remarked that he felt for my situation tremendously.

The Eventual Lesson: Good Intentions
by D. Makover

The parsha tells us how Moshe's good intentions led him to find the means to redeem our people, although this came in stages. Apparently, he got off to a good start.

Sharon Still Has More Cards to Play
by E. Rauchberger

Right-wing circles are praying the investigations against Sharon and his sons will end as quickly as possible, one way or the other. Not out of great concern for the Prime Minister or a sense of pity for the legalistic torment he and his sons are undergoing, but out of ideological concerns, i.e. Eretz Yisroel and Judea and Samaria.
