High Court Orders Sharon to Explain His Failure to Select Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi
by Betzalel Kahn

The High Court issued a nisi order giving Prime Minister and Religious Affairs Minister Ariel Sharon 30 days to explain why he hasn't acted to select a chief rabbi for the City of Tel Aviv. The petition was submitted by the Movement for Fairness in Government.

The City of Tel Aviv did not have a chief rabbi for over four years until two years ago, when the Movement filed its previous petition and the High Court ordered that selection procedures be commenced, eventually leading to the appointment of Rabbi Shlomo Amar. Last year he was chosen for the post of Chief Rabbi of Israel and Tel Aviv has been without a chief rabbi since erev Pesach.

In the current petition Mordechai Eisenberg, chairman of the Movement for Fairness in Government, is asking to hold elections for a new chief rabbi in order to improve religious services in the city.
