Lapid to Head Dayanim Appointment Committee
by Eliezer Rauchberger

A large majority of the Knesset plenum passed a bill in second and third readings that will make Rabbinate Botei Din subordinate to the Justice Ministry, currently headed by Tommy Lapid.

According to the new law the Justice Minister will head the committee for the appointment of dayanim and will decide whether to convene it. The law also stipulates the nosi of the Rabbinate's Beis Din Elyon can ask the minister to convene the committee in order to appoint a new dayan.

The bill transfers various responsibilities once held by the Minister of Religious Affairs to the hands of the nosi of the beis din, particularly matters related to assembling benches of dayanim and appointing avos botei din.
