Shearis Yisroel Rabbonim Issue Directives Regarding Wigs -- Naturally Light-Colored Sheitels OK
By Betzalel Kahn

Rabbonim from Shearis Yisroel's special committee to clarify the kashrus of various types of imported wigs met with Maran HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv, shlita, to clarify numerous questions that arose during discussions held over several days.

HaRav Tzvi Weber, HaRav Tzvi Friedman and HaRav Eliezer Halevy Dunner, rabbonim from the Shearis Yisroel beis din, joined HaRav Aryeh Dvir, HaRav Chaim Katz and HaRav Avrohom Shlomo Leibowitz at the home of HaRav Eliashiv. After relating various findings to Maran on issuing permission to use wigs purchased previously, the rabbonim received clear directives they are now using to thoroughly check the data they have gathered. Some results of their inquiries were published.

Wigs purchased in the past that are permitted according to these as-yet unreleased directives will only be permitted bedi'eved in many cases. In the future no certificates will be issued to any company or individual selling imported wigs unless they are under strict supervision from start to finish.

A partial list of manufaturers in Israel has been released. The rabbonim also determined that there is no chashash on any hair whose natural color is light (bahir). "However there is a possibility that the original color of the hair was dark and they colored it to be light. Therefore, in order to permit light-colored wigs they should be checked carefully if they appear in their natural color, or if they were dyed. Shearis Yisroel has secured, bs"D, a substance that can strip off hair coloring and using that it is possible to determine with certainty if the light color of the sheitel is natural or artificial."

Testing is offered at the offices of Shearis Yisroel, Grand Hall Building, Bnei Brak. The exact times will be published in the daily Hebrew newspaper. The process takes about half an hour.

Among the approved brands are: Miami Custom, Peiot Eva, Lilly Carmel, Peiot Peninah, Jewel Wigs, Peiot Tikvah, Peiot Prestige, Peiot Tzippi, Sarah Cohen, Malkah Goldberg, Feigi Ludmir, Chaya Sterling, Hepei'ah, Peiot Georgy, Peiot Atarah, Varda, Zahavit, Eli. The hechsher only applies to sheitels bought previously and in inventory. In some cases it only applies to some of their products. Full details and addresses should be sought from Shearis or in Hebrew advertisements.
