Beitar Illit Gets First Shabbos Generator
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

For the first time since the city's founding 13 years ago, a Shabbos generator went into operation in Beitar Illit some weeks ago, providing an alternative energy source on Shabbosos and chagim for those who avoid using electricity generated by the Israel Electric Company through chilul Shabbos.

The new generator is the first to adhere to the strictest safety guidelines and standards. All electrical cables are routed through underground tubes, contributing both to safety and improved aesthetics. Though all of the work was performed by certified electrical engineers, the cost for a connection does not exceed that of other Shabbos generators around the country.

An inauguration ceremony was held erev Shabbos Pinchos and attended by moro de'asra HaRav Yaakov Tufik Aviezri and Mayor Rabbi Yitzchok Pindrus, who was given the honor of setting the generator into operation. Other participants included MK Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz, who was spending Shabbos in Beitar to attend his grandson's Shabbos Bar Mitzvah, Deputy Mayor Rabbi Meir Rubinstein, Deputy Mayor Rabbi Yosef Sheetrit, City Council Member Rabbi Yitzchok Ravitz and numerous residents who burst out in a round of, "Yismechu Bemalechusechoh, Shomrei Shabbos."

At the beginning of the preceding week Rabbi Pindrus, along with the generator operators, visited the home of HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, who blessed them for success in all their endeavors in the zchus of shemiras Shabbos kehilchosoh.
