Elections Are in the Air

The 2003 State budget is scheduled to come up for its first vote on Wednesday. Labor, one of the major partners in the government, is threatening to withhold support. If they do not vote for the budget, Prime Minister Sharon has said that he will throw them out of the government.


Interest Rates Held Steady

The Bank of Israel held key lending rates for November unchanged at a rate of 9.1 percent, governor David Klein announced on Monday. Rates have been at this level now for five months. The last change was a two percent hike in July.

Euro-Asian Rabbinical Conference Held in Kazakhstan

Last week the founding conference of the Congress of Euro- Asian Rabbis was held in Alma-Ata, capital of Kazakhstan. The Congress' general secretary, Moscow Chief Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, said all of the rabbonim and kehillos in Eurasia would now benefit from assistance and guidance in all areas of Jewish life and would be well represented in the Congress.

Chiraq Receives Hizbullah Head at Francophone Conference in Beirut

The appearance of Hizbullah head Nassarle on the dignitaries' platform at the Conference of French- Speaking Nations in Beirut while French President Jacques Chiraq was delivering a speech against terrorism, has given rise to renewed tension among French Jews. French newspapers glossed over Nassarle's presence among the heads of state as if they had received orders from above.

Tenafly Eruv Decision Hailed by U.S. Aguda
