Chareidi Environmentalist
by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Chareidi MKs usually deal only with topics closely connected with the public that elected them. This is only to be expected, since they were sent to the Knesset for that purpose. However, the Chairman of the Knesset Interior and Environment Committee, Rabbi Moshe Gafni, has proven that when a chareidi MK accepts a task upon himself, he goes out of his way to do a superb job in every respect, even when he is dealing with issues that do not interest the chareidi public at all, per se.

We are referring to the environment, a topic much touted by groups such as the Greens, Adam Teva Vadin and others, and to which Rabbi Gafni has devoted much time and effort.

Adam Teva Vadin recently published a short report on the activities of MKs on behalf of the environment. Five out of the 120 MKs were chosen as being champions of the environmental cause and none other than Rabbi Gafni was put at the head of the list!

The report points out the following: "As Chairman of the Knesset Interior and Environment Committee, MK Gafni has demonstrated a deep commitment to environmentalism, and he has been instrumental in furthering environmental interests. In his capacity as Chairman MK Gafni has held 42 discussions on environmental topics. He has presented 3 Bills for a First Reading and 2 Regulations with environmental implications. In addition, the Committee has approved for a First and Second Reading the Planning and Building Bill (Amendment -- Survey on the Impact to the Environment). MK Gafni's most important environmental contribution was in his assistance in promoting the Mediterranean Beaches Law, which was presented by MK Yehudit Naot."
