PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Throwing Darts
by R' Zvi Zobin

Downstairs, the Rosh Yeshiva had already started giving his shiur klolli. R' Yossel [not his real name] walked upstairs into the other beis midrash and looked at the students standing there.

Perfectionist

There are two definite types of perfectionism. There is self oriented perfectionism, which is often a genetic trait or an inherent component of a gifted person's character. Then there is socially prescribed perfectionism, which is brought about by parents or teachers (or others) communicating either verbally or by implication, expectations beyond a child's ability.

Divine Providence
by Shira Shatzberg
based on a very true story

Part II

Synopsis: Penina, a Baalas Tshuva living in Jerusalem, makes a quickie international round trip flight with her baby to visit her mother in Providence Hospital, a Catholic hospital. Desperate to catch her return flight but unable to find any cab to the airport, she is given a ride by a kind stranger. In lieu of payment, the only token she finds to give Mary is a (Jewish) book on Divine Providence.

Inappropriate Pressure to Succeed in the Classroom
by Dr. Miriam Adahan, Ph.D.

This article may not be read or internalized by the parents and teachers who need it most. However, if even one parent or teacher realizes how cruel it is to pressure young children, especially in the first three grades, to achieve academic success, then it will not have been written in vain.

Your Medical Questions Answered!
by Joseph B. Leibman, MD

I want to remind all my readers that I enjoy hearing from you. It is not necessary to mention in your letters "do not print my name," as I never do. All correspondents should know that it takes about six weeks for answers to questions to appear in my column, so if you need a more immediate answer, you should include a self-addressed envelope with a stamp, and you will be answered at once.

Children Crave Care

by Esther Ziens

FROM cradle to crawl they don't cease to call
Clearly and commandingly for care.
FROM creep to control they cry, "Come! Console!"
To their consternation none can compare.
FROM cuddle to climb they fill up our time
As we chase them both up and down stairs.
FROM crayons to chalk they soon learn to balk
For their homework no time can they spare.
FROM classroom to shul their clothes fit the rule,
Though they bring them home oft with a tear.
FROM cooking them curry and chicken we scurry
To search for compatible pairs.

*

FROM canopy to crown their paths are laid down
As the breach in the chain they repair.
As our children move on and their own children spawn,
Let us cherish the nachas we share.
