Bush and Blair Back Palestinian State

Last week, in a clear attempt to placate his Arab partners in his war on terror, U.S. President George W. Bush declared that the Palestinians should have a state of their own. British Prime Minister Tony Blair followed his lead on Monday.

Traditional Circumcision Crippled in Sweden

On October 1 a law went into effect in Sweden interfering with the age-old Jewish practice of circumcision. A registered doctor must be present at the religious ceremony and must inject the infant with an analgesic or an anesthetic. This means that no Jewish circumcision may be performed on Shabbos or yom tov, as the injection violates Shabbos and is not necessary to perform the circumcision. According to reports received by Yated Ne'eman, the matter became an issue of public debate in Sweden and it was dicussed in the popular media.

The Story Behind the Recent Shuafat Shooting

From the coverage it received in the Israeli media, the story of how Pinchas and Mali Cohen survived a terrorist shooting attack on Chol Hamoed Sukkos seemed nothing out of the ordinary. Work Begins In Pisgat Zeev for New Jerusalem Traffic Scheme

Large-scale work on the infrastructure for Jerusalem's new transportation system has begun in Pisgat Zeev. The plan is based on a light rail transport system. Construction is being carried out along the first route to run from Pisgat Zeev along Yaffo Road to Mt. Herzl. Auxiliary bus lines will travel from Derech Hevron Road through the city center until the outskirts of Ramot.

Expanded Shearis Yisroel Kashrus Activity

The activities of the Shearis Yisroel kashrus network gained considerable impetus toward the end of the past shmittah year. The BaDaTz of Shearis Yisroel prepared up-to-date writs of pruzbul in order to enable Jews to fulfill this mitzvah in the best manner possible. Tens of thousands of copies were distributed throughout the country, accompanied by explanatory information. Special botei din were set up for the pruzbolim.

2001 Nobel Prizes Awarded

The 100th Nobel prize for peace went to both the United Nations and Secretary General Kofi Annan, who was credited with bringing new life to the organization. U.N. officials noted that the decision on the award was made on Sept. 28, when the attacks must have been on the minds of the jurors.

On erev Succos, a pained, shocked throng of thousands, including students and alumni of Yeshivas Ponevezh, accompanied Rebbetzin Henia Rochel Edelstein, o"h, on her last earthly journey. She was eishes chover to HaRav Yerachmiel Gershon Edelstein, yibodel lechayim tovim ve'arukim, one of the roshei yeshiva of Ponovezh. The levaya was headed by roshei yeshiva and dayonim. Rebbetzin Henia Rochel was 75 years old at the time of her petiroh.

HaRav Yehuda Hakohen Rabin zt"l

A huge throng of mourners from Jerusalem, led by rabbonim, dayonim and roshei yeshivos and members of the Bucharian community accompanied HaRav Yehuda HaKohen Rabin, zt"l, on his last earthly journey on 16 Tishrei. He was the chief rabbi of the Bucharian community in Eretz Yisroel and head of the Atteres Chizkiyah beis medrash. HaRav Rabin was 83 years old at the time of his petiroh.
