Chana Rivka Wunder o"h

by Betzalel Kahn

On Wednesday night 22 Shvat, hundreds of residents of Jerusalem's Kiryat Mattersdorf and Kiryat Unsdorf, led by rabbonim, gedolei haTorah and public figures, accompanied Chana Rivka Wunder, o"h, on her last earthly journey. Chana Rivka, who was only six years old at the time of her petirah, had suffered from a dreaded illness that had caused her much pain.

Chana Rivka is the daughter of HaRav Avrohom Yeshaya Wunder, a prominent Jerusalem avreich and a daf hayomi maggid shiur in the Zichron Moshe shul. She is the daughter of Soroh, of the Leitner family in Gateshead. Her grandfather is the noted author, Rabbi Mayer Wunder of Kiryat Mattersdorf.

Last year it was learned that Chana Rivka had contracted a malignant disease. She underwent many difficult operations and treatments. During that period, her family, as well as neighbors and acquaintances, took care of her with exemplary dedication. Numerous prayers were recited for her recovery, and a special prayer rally was held for her sake in her neighborhood. Her situation recently deteriorated, and on Wednesday night she returned her pure soul to its Maker in her home, in the presence of her family and a minyan of bnei yeshiva from Torah Ohr.

The levaya, leaving from her home, was attended by hundreds of mourners who had come to participate in the family's sorrow. Before the levaya set out to the cemetery, stirring hespedim were delivered by HaRav Moshe Kopschitz, the rav of Chanichei Hayeshivos in Romema; HaRav Yitzchok Ezrachi, one of the roshei yeshiva of Mir; and HaRav Yaakov Kruger, the rav of Kehilas Chaim in Mattersdorf.

With great sadness, the maspidim described the terrible calamity which befell this outstanding family. They aroused people to do teshuva and to take stock of their ways, especially during this period in which our community has known so many heavy losses. With great emotion, her father parted from her, and in a heart-rending, tear-choked voice, justified the din.

At the conclusion of the hespedim, the levaya passed through the streets of Kiryat Mattersdorf on its way to Har Hamenuchos in Givat Shaul.
