Suicide Bomber Murders Two Soldiers in Binyamina

Two IDF soldiers, a man and a woman, were killed, another soldier was seriously wounded, and at least eight civilians were wounded -- two of them seriously -- when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up near the entrance to the Binyamina railway station Monday evening.

High-tech Exports Plummet; Finance Minister and Bank Governor Blame Each Other

Exports from the high-tech sector dropped 13.5 percent in the second quarter (compared to the first) to $2.4 billion, making it the worst quarter in six years, according to the Manufacturers Association. Meanwhile Finance Minister Silvan Shalom and Governor of the Bank of Israel David Klein continued their ongoing public debate.

Torah Jewry went into deep mourning last Wednesday, 20 Tammuz, at the passing of HaRav Chaim Shaul Karelitz, mashgiach of Beis Meir Yeshiva, head of the Shearis Yisroel kashrus organization, and one of the great advocates for Sephardi Jewry in Eretz Yisroel. HaRav Karelitz returned his holy neshomoh to his Maker at dawn that day. He was in the 89th year of his life.

The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism's heated opposition to the proposed "Federal Marriage Amendment" to the U.S. Constitution is "yet another sad example of how far the Reform movement has distanced itself from the faith of our fathers," a spokesman for Agudath Israel of America noted.

Bill Passes Preliminary Reading: Baal Teshuva May Not be Fired for Refusing to Work on Shabbos

A bill enabling an employee who used to work on Shabbos but later did teshuva to inform his employers that he will no longer work on Shabbos was passed at a preliminary reading in the Knesset on 13 Tammuz. The bill was submitted by Rachamim Malul of Shas. According to the bill, once an employee has given such notice, the employer may not fire him for this reason.

4000 Conversions Per Year in Israel Since 2000

At a meeting of the Knesset Immigration and Absorption Committee on 20 Sivan, Director of Rabbinical Courts Eli Ben Dahan reported that about 4000 conversions have been performed annually since the beginning of 2000. This is in contrast to the mere 340 conversions that took place in 1990.

HaRav Sholom Tzvi Hacohen Shapira, zt"l

Thousands of mournful Bnei Brak residents headed by gedolei HaTorah accompanied HaRav Sholom Tzvi Hacohen Shapira, zt"l, on his last earthly journey. He was a ram and a menahel ruchani in the Or HaTorah yeshiva, author of the illustrious works: Kovetz Bei'urim Al HaRambam, Hamaor ShebaTorah and Meishiv Nefesh. He was niftar after an illness at the age of 81.

A Soldier and a General

It was a sight familiar to the Yated Ne'eman staff. HaRav Chaim Shaul Karelitz zt'l suddenly appears, asking to speak with the director general and the editors. News of the surprise visit quickly spreads around the building. Workers from various departments look at him with admiration. Newer workers, seeing this sight for the first time, bump into walls, not believing their eyes.
