Bank Leumi Desecrates Shabbos
by Betzalel Kahn

Bank Leumi has begun to operate a credit center for preferred clients which operates all week long (24/7), including Shabbos and holidays.

This center is manned by employees of Bank Leumi, and is meant for owners of Leumi Card credit cards. Bank Leumi is the only financial body in the country which operates a manned center on Shabbos.

On Monday (8 Cheshvan), Rabbi Avrohom Ravitz wrote an urgent letter to the administration of Bank Leumi, asking it not to set a precedent for Shabbos desecration. șAs both a national bank and one which serves many mitzvah observant clients, Bank Leumi is obligated to be heedful of Jewish values,»he said in his letter.

In the past, Bank Leumi was involved in a bitter struggle with the religious community over the construction of a hotel in Tiveriya by a subsidiary. Since then, the subsidiary, Africa-Israel, was been sold to Lev Levayev, a religious Jew, and it is now in the forefront of companies that stand up for religious values and especially Shabbos observance at its Ramat Aviv shopping mall, now the most successful shopping mall in Israel despite being closed for business on Shabbos.
