OPINION & COMMENT

The High Court Cannot be Society's Moral Authority

More and more senior Israeli legal experts are criticizing the approach of current President of the High Court Aharon Barak, in terms which are remarkably similar to the criticisms leveled by the chareidi community against the High Court, but for which we were called "anti- democratic." The recent critics, however, have credentials that do not allow this charge to be used against them.

by HaRav Chaim Ezra Barzel

On the first night of Chanukah we add the brocho of shehecheyonu (Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season) to the brochos of lehadlik ner shel Chanukah and she'osoh nissim.

Masters and Servants of the Heart: A Shmuess
By HaRav Sholom Schwadron zt'l

"And Dovid said to his heart, `Now, I will one day be finished at Shaul's hand . . . ' " In the previous perek (Shmuel I 26:7-8), we learn that, "Dovid and Avishai came to the people at night and there was Shaul lying and sleeping inside the ring with his spear wedged into the ground by his head, and Avner and the people were lying roundabout him. Avishai said to Dovid, `Hashem has put your enemy in your power. And now, I will smite him with the spear through to the ground, with one blow and I will not [need to] do it a second time.' "

"From Of Old It Was Ordained"
by L. Jungerman

The manner in which this week's portion describes the birth of Peretz and Zerach is shrouded in mystery. "And it happened at the time of her birth and lo, there were twins in her womb." If their fact of being twins is stressed, there must be a special significance in it. This is why the Torah states, "And lo!" See! Contemplate!
