MKs Tell High Court To Back Off Contentious Issues

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

The Knesset plenum confirmed a decision on Monday to call on the High Court "to avoid becoming involved in value-based, halachic, ideological or political issues."

The decision was passed by a majority of 14 to 10. The motion was supported by Shas, United Torah Judaism, the National Union and the Likud. MKs from One Israel, Hadash, the Center Party and Shinui voted against the decision.

The motion, drafted by the UTJ faction, carried following a debate in the plenum about "the legal system, law enforcement and the interview in the Ha'aretz Weekend Magazine with Professor Ruth Gavison."

The Knesset appealed to the High Court to distance itself from any involvement in the Knesset's legislative work and the status quo in religious matters that has existed since the establishment of the state.
