Four Ancient Sifrei Torah in Tiveria Stolen

by Yated Ne'eman Staff

Four very special ancient sifrei Torah were stolen last week from an ancient synagogue near the promenade in Tiveria.

Commander-in-chief of the Tiveria region, Deputy Police Commander Yaakov Zigdon, stated that the burglary had been carefully planned and that the perpetrators left no traces. Members of the congregation who arrived for shacharis were startled to see that the sifrei Torah had been stolen, and some even burst into tears.

Over the past few months, synagogues in Tzfas, Tiveria and Acco have been ransacked, while religious artifacts and sifrei Torah worth millions of shekels have been stolen. As a result, northern region police are considering establishing a regional team to investigate the thefts of religious artifacts. It is assumed that the stolen artifacts are smuggled to collectors abroad.
