Letter By HaRav Yosef Sholom Eliashiv About Shmitta
by M. Bennett and Yated Ne'eman Staff

The following is the full text of a letter issued by HaRav Eliashiv on Friday, 15 Elul.

To those who fear Hashem's word and devotedly fulfill the mitzvah of shmitta in its true halachic form:

Let us strengthen the mitzvah performers, the personnel of Department for Land-Related Laws in Jerusalem, who strive to strengthen the walls of kashrus lemehadrin. They have hitherto been mindful to the imperative to provide bnei Torah with all their needs regarding the separation of terumos, ma'asros, orlah and the observance of all of the laws of shmitta according to halocho without the slightest compromise. Now they have increased their sacred activities by making certain with great mesiras nefesh so that no resident of Yerushalayim Ir Hakodesh will stumble by the [purchase or consumption] of food which is sefichin.

All this is in the merit of the great dedication of those involved in meleches hakodesh, headed by HaRav Yosef Efrati. They are shluchei Rachmono and shluchei didan and all their efforts comply with halocho. They have also instated the emissary bills (shtar shelichus) accordingly. Therefore, I seek to encourage them in their efforts. All chareidim lidvar Hashem should know that they may rely upon the kashrus hamehuderes of the Department for Land-Related Laws in Jerusalem and eat the produce they certify. All who help them will have a share in the great zechus of inculcating shemiras shevi'is kehilchoso in Eretz Hakodesh.
